Pavers vs Concrete for a South Florida Driveway
Both are legitimate. They fail differently, repair differently, and ask different things of the ground underneath — which is where the decision actually lives.
Declare the bias first
Arco installs paver driveways. We do not pour concrete ones. You should know that before reading a comparison written by us, and you should apply the same scepticism to the concrete contractor's version of this article.
What follows is written to survive that disclosure. There are places below where concrete is the better answer, and they are marked as such rather than buried. If you finish this page and decide on concrete, the article has done its job — you will at least know what to ask the person pouring it.

Most of the argument is about the wrong thing
Homeowners are usually presented with this as a materials question: which one lasts longer, which one looks better, which one costs more. That framing is why so many driveways disappoint.
A driveway is a structure that carries repeated vehicle loads over ground that moves. Both a poured slab and a field of interlocking units can do that job for a long time, and both will fail early if what is beneath them was not built to carry them. In that sense the two options are far more alike than the marketing on either side suggests.
Where they genuinely differ is in how they behave once something does go wrong — and something eventually does, because the ground under a South Florida driveway is not static.
So the useful comparison is not "which is better". It is: what does each one do when a root gets underneath it, when a corner settles, or when a utility has to be reached — and how much of the surface do you have to lose to put it right?
The real difference
How each one fails
Not whether — how. This is the comparison worth having.

Read that table honestly and it says one thing: a paver driveway is a system that can be taken apart and put back, and a concrete driveway is a single object that has to be broken to be changed. Everything else in this comparison follows from that.
In practice
What a repair actually involves
On pavers
The units over the affected area are lifted, the bedding and base beneath them corrected, and the same units relaid. Done properly the repair is invisible, because the material going back down is the material that came up — it has weathered alongside everything around it.
The catch worth knowing: this only works if the cause was addressed. Relaying units over a root that is still growing buys a couple of years, and a contractor who offers that without saying so is not doing you a favour.
On concrete
A crack can be filled, and a filled crack looks like a filled crack. A failed section is saw-cut, broken out and re-poured, and the new concrete will differ in colour from the old for a long time — sometimes permanently. Resurfacing products exist and can look good, though they are a surface over a substrate that is still doing whatever caused the problem.
None of that makes concrete a bad driveway. It makes it a driveway you should build with the expectation that repairs will be visible.
The part nobody photographs
What is under it decides more than what is on it
Here is the sentence that should govern the whole decision: a well-built driveway in the material you like less will outlast a badly built one in the material you prefer. Not by a little.
Both systems need the existing ground taken out to a sensible depth, a suitable aggregate placed and compacted in layers, and the finished level set so water runs off somewhere useful. On a replacement, that means exposing what the old driveway was sitting on and looking at it, rather than assuming it can be reused — because if the original sub-grade is what failed, building the same thing back on top of it produces the same result on a delay.
What makes this hard as a buyer is that the part that matters is invisible by the time you see the finished job. Two quotes can look identical on paper and differ substantially in excavation depth, base material and compaction, and you cannot tell which is which from the photographs.
That is not an argument for either surface. It is an argument for asking the questions in the final section of both contractors, and for treating a quote that is silent on the groundwork as incomplete rather than competitive.

Day to day
Living with each one
Upkeep, pavers
Washing, keeping the joints topped up where material migrates, and dealing with growth in the joints. Sealing is optional and changes appearance; it is a preference rather than a requirement.
Upkeep, concrete
Washing, and dealing with staining, which shows readily on a large uninterrupted pale surface. Sealing is more commonly recommended and needs redoing.
Heat underfoot
Both get hot in direct sun, and colour matters more than material. Pale surfaces of either type are more bearable than dark ones, and neither stays cool in the afternoon.
Appearance over time
Pavers weather as a field of individual units, so ageing reads as texture. A large concrete slab ages as one plane, so marks and patches read as marks and patches.
Design flexibility
Units come in a wide range of formats, colours and laying patterns, and borders or banding are straightforward. Concrete can be finished and coloured, though the palette is narrower and the result is uniform by nature.
Where the drive meets everything else
The junctions with the garage threshold, the path, the road and the lawn are where either surface looks considered or improvised. That is a detailing question rather than a material one.
The decision
Choose by what you actually care about
Choose pavers if the ability to lift and relay matters to you — because there are mature trees near the drive, because something is buried under it, or because you would rather a future repair disappear than announce itself. Also if you want a specific format, colour or pattern, or a border that ties the drive to the rest of the property.
Choose concrete if you want a single uninterrupted plane and are content with the way it ages, or if a contractor you trust has looked at your ground and made a case for it. It is a perfectly good driveway and this article is not pretending otherwise.
Do not choose either on the strength of a lifespan claim. Both outlive the ground beneath them when that ground is built correctly, and both fail early when it is not. A contractor quoting you a number of years for a surface without having looked at what is underneath is quoting you a marketing figure.
And if the two quotes differ a lot, find out where the difference is before assuming one is a bargain. It is frequently in excavation depth and base thickness — the two things you will never see again once the surface is down.

Six questions for either contractor

How deep are you excavating, and to what?
You want an answer about the existing sub-grade being exposed and assessed, not one about the thickness of the visible layer.

What is the build-up, and how is it compacted?
You are listening for specifics about material and lifts. Hesitation at this question tells you more about a quote than any other part of the conversation.

Where does the water go?
Water leaving a large paved slope has to end up in a specific place, and that place should be named out loud. Two answers to reject: toward the garage, and over the property line.

What happens if the sub-grade is worse than expected?
Digging out an old drive turns up surprises often enough that the contract should already say what happens next — who decides, and on what basis the price moves.

How do the edges get restrained?
On pavers this is what stops the field spreading. On concrete it is about how the edge is formed and supported. Either way it should have an answer.

What approvals does this need at my address?
Requirements vary by jurisdiction and by scope. The right answer is that they will be confirmed with the reviewing authority for your property — not a confident general claim in either direction.
Where this comes up most
The repair question lands hardest in the older, heavily planted parts of the county — Plantation is the clearest example, where mature roots under decades-old driveways are a routine finding rather than an occasional one. On the larger parcels in Davie the approach from the road is often long enough to be a project in its own right, which changes the arithmetic on both options. And in Boca Raton the front elevation usually carries enough architectural character that format and proportion matter as much as construction.
